At Terra Viva Horticulture our commitment to sustainability extends far beyond the gardens we create and maintain.
It is rooted in first-hand experience of habitat restoration, community conservation and protecting the natural world.These experiences continue to shape the values behind everything we do today.
Our Story
Where it all began
Before founding Terra Viva Horticulture I spent time living in the remote Karen village of Huay Pakkoot in northern Thailand. During this period I worked alongside local families, conservationists and mahouts to support the transition of formerly working elephants back to protected forest environments.
Living with the community offered a unique insight into the relationships between people, wildlife and the landscapes they share. It reinforced a belief that successful conservation depends upon long-term stewardship, local knowledge and sustainable land management.
During my time in Huay Pakkoot I also established a community reforestation project. This initative continues today, with native trees being planted each year to restore degraded forest, improve biodiversity and create healthier habitats for future generations.

The Huay Pakkoot Elephant
Community Foundation
The Huay Pakkoot Elephant Community Foundation was founded by members of the Karen community to protect elephants, conserve native forests and provide sustainable livlehoods for local families
Rather than traditional elephant tourism, the foundation promotes an ethical model where elephants are able to roam freely within community managed forests while visitors observe their natural behaviour respectfully
Terra Viva proudly continues to support the foundation whose values helped inspire our own approach to environmental stewardship.
Huay Pakkoot Gibbon Tours
The forests surrounding Huay Pakkoot are home to thriving populations of wild Lar Gibbons and extraordinary diversity of native wildlife.
Community led conservation and carefully managed eco-tourism provide an opportunity to experience these forests while directly supporting local people and encouraging long-term habitat protection.
Rebuilding Forests for Future Generations
One of the projects established during my time in Huay Pakkoot was a community reforestation initiative designed to restore areas of degraded forest with native tree species.
Although my time in Thailand came to an end, the project continues through the dedication of the local community. Knowing that trees planted years ago are now growing into healthy forest serves as a constant reminder that meaningful environmental work is built over decades, not seasons.
This philosophy remains cantral to Terra Viva Horticulture today. Whether restoring a woodland edge, improving biodiversity within a private garden or planning for future generations, our work is always guided by long-tern thinking.
